SIGERA (Sistema Integrado de Gestión de la Energía y los Recursos Ambientales para procesos industriales económicamente sostenibles) started from a simple observation: assessing the economic, social and environmental sustainability of a management decision requires considering the whole supply chain behind a given product or service. Yet almost every decision-support system available to the process industry assumes a centralised view of that chain, in which a single manager decides for every link without considering the specific objectives of each one (even though in practice those links usually belong to different actors), or assumes that one section of the chain is the important one and the rest exist to serve it.
The project developed decision-support tools applying systematic, transparent and objective criteria to the integrated management of resources in the process industry, specifically in situations where several of those resources must be managed simultaneously in cooperative, competitive or mixed environments. Models representing the consumption, use and generation of the different resources considered (external and internal, own and third-party) were developed and combined to that end.
