AIMS

Advanced Integration Methods for the Efficient Symbiosis of Process Networks.

Code: DPI2017-87435-R Director: Moisès Graells Sobré Funding: Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (Spain) Period: January 2018 – June 2021 Repository: AIMS at UPCommons

AIMS addressed the efficient use of resources and raw materials, and the use of clean, efficient and safe energy systems in the process industries, from a holistic, non-hierarchical and cross-sectoral point of view. Departing from the limits imposed by the conservation and transfer laws, the project relied on the Process Systems Engineering approach to propose efficient ways of intensifying the interactions between different processing systems and supply chains, identifying and promoting industrial symbiosis opportunities and fostering collaborative decision making and circular economy solutions.

Current industrial symbiosis practice identifies opportunities through ad-hoc expert analysis, which even after a systematic local search usually leads to sub-optimal solutions. AIMS instead based its proposals on the systematic collection and processing of data, the use of common models ensuring interoperability between information and knowledge management tools, and the transparent assessment of the resulting solutions.
