Antonio Espuña Camarasa

Former Professor of Chemical Engineering, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC)

Profile

Antonio Espuña is an Industrial Engineer (1986) and holds a PhD (1994). He was Professor of Chemical Engineering at UPC.

Since 1986 he has taken part, as researcher and technical lead, in more than 30 research and development projects on the management of chemical processes (modelling, design, optimisation and control), funded by local, national and international administrations (EU, NATO, etc.) as well as by private companies. Over the same period he has been responsible for more than 20 subjects at undergraduate and master’s level, mainly in chemical and environmental engineering. He has participated in national and international training programmes such as TEMPUS, Marie Curie and LEONARDO (EU) and NATO, and in training courses tailored to specific industrial needs.

He has co-authored more than 90 papers in JCR-indexed journals and more than 160 contributions to international conferences on environmental engineering, chemical engineering and process control. He has served on the scientific committee of five of these conferences and on the organising committee of two, and has been invited speaker at two.

Research interests

Within process systems engineering, his research has focused on:

  • Batch process management
  • Process integration and process intensification
  • Sustainability and circular economy applications

On the methodological side, he is interested in combining modelling and optimisation techniques (mathematical programming, stochastic and metaheuristic algorithms, artificial intelligence tools, etc.) for decision support, information management and standardisation.
